Dune

The novel (not the movies) is one of the greatest pieces of art in the last 50 years. Its astute and almost prescient observations of the importance of Mid-Eastern oil in politics, global-economics, religion, and culture earns it:

I wish he had written more... I point to Dune as the book that changed my life and made me a "reader".

When I was 14-15 I "forced" myself to read it (that was tough for me at the time) and I proved to myself that I could unlock a huge universe of ideas if I made the effort.

Dyslexia+Herbert=tough read for a young teen. : )

So Dune has a very high space on my shelf. It has been amazing to watch world events unfold with the understanding that Dune provided to me at such a young age... Not that its been an exact prediction, But Herbert sure seemed to have some remarkable clarity about cultures clashing over precious resources...

hmmm, wonder were he hid the time machine?

Herbert was definitely a visionary. I haven't heard good things about the novels his son wrote in the Dune series, but I haven't read so I won't judge.

I'm reading The Watchmen now. I'm only ~30 pages in, but it is fantastic so far. I can see why it won so many awards.
